In this tribute to his parents, Pawlikowski’s love story takes place in Poland during the Cold War. Zula, an ambitious rural girl with a restless spirit, is trapped behind the Iron Curtain. She meets Wiktor, the director, when she auditions for a Polish national musical troupe. She falls in love but he is looking for an excuse to defect to the west.
