This low-key war drama is based on the 1924 novel by Ernest Pérochon. Set in rural France, it tells the story of the Paridier family, soon after the outbreak of World War I. Matriarch Hortense is responsible for running everything on the family farm, since all the male members have been sent to the front, and she’s left with her pregnant daughter Solange.
“This gentle but impactful Great War drama is as eye-wateringly beautiful as a Renoir landscape ” – Time Out

Once upon a time in France . . . nothing happened!
Very Thomas Hardy.
Atmospheric and informative.
Beautiful, slow, sad and painful.
Farm and countryside were the real stars.
Too much silence.
Would have liked a cheery ending after sitting there for two and a half hours!
