This masterpiece of Spanish cinema was Erice’s debut and overall is a symbolic representation of the Fascist’s defeat of Socialism in 1940 and its devastating affect on society. The symbolism is depicted as a touching tale of a six year olds girl’s love and concern for a young, wounded Republican soldier, Jose Villasante, whom she conflates with Frankenstein. The girl Ana, is played by Ana Torrent. The other members of her family, her father, mother and sister have other personal concerns, and to a greater or lesser degree represent the forces of Fascism. Ana attempts to provide succour for ‘Frankenstein’, who is concealed in a remote mountain sheep-fold, but her father follows her!

Great sympathy for the child, with meaningful photography.
Great to have a Spanish language film.
